Apparently, I am about 20 years behind. Having spent the majority of my life writing on paper, reading on paper, grading on paper, instructing on paper, and doing all things language on paper, I have missed the digital boat that is "blogging." Blogging - this still sounds like a word I might have used 20 years ago after spending too much time out with friends on a Friday night, maybe laughing because I made up a funny new word; maybe just making the sound in the bathroom, loudly, not nice.
I am an English teacher. A sophomore English teacher. For the majority of my professional career I used paper. Computers were friendlier typewriters - a way to make more papers to read, grade, and use to instruct. Bonus, to those papers, I can add to, amend, adapt, and a hundred other "A" words instantly. The computer had begun its integration into my classroom, but it was, for me, a fantastic tool for research and a great way to quickly access material that I could relate to things we were covering in class! Reading The Crucible? Hey class, let's look up Red Scare, McCarthyism, blacklisting... What a great tool! Then Covid arrived. "You want me to do what? I have to get every piece of paper I use in class to them how?"
So began my technological edification.
Did I mention I am a teacher? A high school teacher? A high school English teacher? You know how it goes, "It is a calling." "You are doing it for the kids." "The money is not important." (and the always popular, "It must be nice to only work nine months a year." Riiight.) I did it because I love the language. I love to read, to look at the history behind the piece, to get images in my head, to live vicariously through the characters. I love to create pieces that allow others to do the same.
However, everyone needs a change at sometime.
After many years in the classroom, it has become obvious to me that it is time to shake things up a bit. It is time to do the thing that I love in a different arena. It is time to take this romance with the language in a new direction. God help me, it is time to start blogging.
So today I was thinking, maybe I will use this computer and give it a try.
Here I am, and here you are. Let's see where it takes us
